We know that a car accident can be a scary. Often times the individuals involved are disoriented after an accident either from the adrenaline rush that happens after the accident or possibly from hitting their head during the accident so we put together this list of 7 things you should do immediately following your accident.
The important thing is to try and calm yourself and remember what to do right after the accident. Or for many people reading this after the accident, you should still make sure you have completed all of these steps.
- Safety First~ First, make sure that you and all of your passengers are safe. If anyone appears to be hurt immediately call 911. If it is safe and you are able to, move your vehicle to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights. If you are unable to move your vehicle and our in the middle of the road, stay in the vehicle until help arrives.
- Exchange Information ~ Be sure to exchange your information with other drivers. Make sure to get their; Name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, license plate, and driver’s license number. Tip: One of the easiest ways to ensure you get all of their information is to take a picture of the front and back of their drivers license and insurance card.
- Police~ We suggest you ALWAYS call the police to the scene of the accident, even in minor accidents. This will ensure that you are able to get an accurate accident report which you can obtain for the police station or department of motor vehicles. Accident reports are needed by your insurance company and in some cases be vital to your cases medical coverage.
- Photograph The Accident~ More than likely your cell phone has the capability to take photos and you will want to make sure you use your camera or cell phone camera to document the accident. This step can be important in helping you make a case with the claims adjuster and insurance company.
- Call Your Insurance Company ~ Call your insurance agent and make them aware of the accident at your earliest convenience. They will want to know details about the accident, your injuries (Note: Sometimes injuries do not manifest for a few days, to weeks depending on the accident), and the damage to your vehicle. They may need you to fill out some paperwork.
- Call A Healthcare Professional ~ Make sure to call your doctor even if you do not have pain and see what they recommend. Often times they will suggest you see a chiropractor following an auto accident, because they are experts in whiplash muscle and spine injuries.
- Get An Attorney~ You will also want to contact your attorney or one who specializes in auto accidents. Attorneys can be very helpful in talking to your insurance company or the other driver’s insurance company when settling or closing your car accident claim.
